In communities of all sizes and shapes, families face multiple challenges that may inhibit their ability to effectively raise and support their children. The statistics below illustrate Orange County’s need for the Life Classes One Heart for Women and Children provides:
• 32.9% of persons below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level in Orange County, FL. This is higher than the state of Florida that is at 31.4%. Many families lack a decent standard of living because their families are either hovering near the poverty line or move in and out of poverty.
• 25.6% teen birth rate (ages 15-17) as of 2009 in Orange County, FL. This is 3% higher than the State of Florida. This typically results in teens who are often unprepared to take on the tasks of parenthood. The increasing incidence of parental substance abuse, child abuse and neglect (often related to substance abuse), parental AIDS, incarceration, divorce, and desertion have resulted in substantially higher rates of children being raised by grandparents.
The primary purpose of these Classes is to assist in the improvement of the quality of family life. Utilizing nurturing, supportive provision of referrals and crisis assistance.
